In his annual Year-End Report on the Federal Judiciary, Chief Justice Roberts focused on the urgent need for more and better civic education. “We have come to take democracy for granted, and civic education has fallen by the wayside,” he wrote.
 
The Chief Justice pointed to the work of iCivics as an important and effective civic learning partner with close ties to the Court working to improve civic readiness among students.
 
He said, "My retired colleague Justice Sandra Day O’Connor helped to found iCivics, a non-profit that engages students in meaningful civic learning through free teacher resources, including video gaming. (As they say, to reach people you have to meet them where they are.) Justice Sonia Sotomayor has picked up the torch in that effort." 
 
We are delighted to see civic education elevated on the national agenda and echo Justice Roberts' sentiments that we must provide young people with the "tools to understand and improve" their government.

"Civic education, like all education, is a continuing enterprise and conversation. Each generation has an obligation to pass on to the next, not only a fully functioning government responsive to the needs of the people, but the tools to understand and improve it."
