How Does Culture Impact the Way We Live?

In this unit, the story of the Clotilda Africans is the backdrop to learning about cultural values. Students will see how they incorporated many of the Yoruba cultural values they had learned as children in West Africa into their new community of Africatown, located in Alabama. They will have opportunities to reflect on the cultural values that are important to them and their families.

    This inquiry-based unit puts kids on the map! Key vocabulary and primary source information allow kids to study different map projections and learn how maps have changed over time. The 1904 World’s Fair Map will be the guide to practice their newly acquired map skills.

    Why Do People Move?

    Grade 2

    People move for many different reasons. Maybe for jobs or to be closer to family. In this inquiry-based unit, students will learn all about moving. They will start by learning about the push and pull factors that cause animals to move. While learning new vocabulary, listening to stories, and examining primary source materials, students will better understand reasons why humans move. The unit ends with stories of the push and pull factors that influenced the Great Migration.
