WellSpring (California) - A Framework for Improving Mental Health at College Campuses

About

Due to the prevalence of mental illness coupled with our personal experiences, we felt compelled to come up with a local solution for improving mental health services on college campus that could be scaled nationally. Even though each of our respective colleges had some existing infrastructure to address student mental health concerns, we had all witnessed many incidents of mental health illness within our local community. This raised a larger question: why do the current mental health programs in colleges fail?

In surveying the literature, we found that there were barriers that limited the efficacy of mental health service programs.

Of particular note, we found that findings from the literature cohered well with our own experiences locally of the stigma that prevents students from accessing mental health services on campus. With our findings from the literature and based on our personal experience, we started WellSpring, which addresses these barriers. We wanted to present the first campus-wide online tool for students to access mental health services, resources, and trained professionals on their own time within the fast pace of college students’ lives.

We will make WellSpring an online tool to allow for large-scale dissemination, thereby increasing the reach of our mental health services compared to existing services at universities.
