Democracy at a Crossroads: A National Summit to Promote Innovative Civic Learning Now

iCivics co-hosted a national summit to focus attention on why our nation needs innovative civic learning now. With over 250 people in attendance, strong press coverage and a roster of panelists that included Justice Sonia Sotomayor, former Education Secretary John King, PBS anchor Judy Woodruff and so many others, the summit was a huge success by all accounts.

Our nation faces enormous challenges at home and overseas, yet we are deeply divided. As Americans, we have increasingly segregated ourselves into echo chambers of the like-minded. To shed light and spur action on this issue, Carnegie Corporation of New York and the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation sponsored a summit on September 21, 2017 in Washington, DC.  iCivics – the largest civic education provider in the country founded by Justice Sandra Day O’Connor (U.S. Supreme Court, Ret.), the Jonathan Tisch College of Civic Life at Tufts University, the Campaign for the Civic Mission of Schools and the Lou Frey Institute are co-hosting the summit and coordinating the program.

Over the course of my time in Boston, I have written about social studies education, helped develop and write curriculum, and worked to create more SLL (second language learner) access to the iCivics suite of games.

Meeting the Needs of EVERY iCivics Student

Millions of students play “Do I Have a Right?” each school year. Within the game, they have the opportunity to create new identities for themselves, to exercise agency, and to behave altruistically through helping people solve problems around constitutional law issues. Students bring their knowledge of the outside world into a fictitious environment, and along the way become well-versed in the legal protections provided in the Bill of Rights and other amendments. An additional bonus is that it’s just fun!

Increasing Content Acquisition for Second Language Learners in Social Studies Classrooms

While an immense amount of work, pioneered by Jim Cummins and Stephen Krashen, has focused on language acquisition among SLLs and language acquisition versus content acquisition, it is key to remember there are specific challenges and obstacles facing SLLs in social studies content (O’Brien, 2012).
