This month, iCivics is thrilled to announce two notable additions to our Governing Board: Mr. Jay O’Connor and Mr. Tom Lue, Esq. Both are invested in our mission to provide free and high-quality civic education resources to teachers and students. And both bring with them significant expertise from the technology and legal fields, sure to enrich our organization.

Mr. O’Connor is a senior software industry executive with a track record of driving rapid growth. He is currently Venture Partner at the venture capital firm, Morgan Stanley Expansion Capital. And he describes himself as always on the lookout for that “wow” element in new products and teams. “My two sons are in middle school,” he says “and both are active users of iCivics. We love how it makes it fun and interesting to learn about civics.” But Mr. O’Connor is motivated, and personally invested, in iCivics for an even more personal reason. “My mother Sandra founded iCivics in 2009. I am thrilled to contribute to this organization and help build on the wonderful things the team has achieved over the years.”

Mr. O’Connor has previously served as Chief Marketing Officer at various Silicon Valley software companies and helped create and grow these into billion dollar businesses. As SVP of Worldwide Marketing at NetSuite (NYSE: N) he led the marketing team and helped NetSuite become one of the world’s leading software companies. And at Intuit (INTU) he oversaw the marketing and product management team that acquired the first million QuickBooks customers. Mr. O’Connor also serves on the Board of Directors of MotionPoint and CallFire, two private software companies.

iCivics is proud to also welcome Mr. Tom Lue, Senior Counsel for Google’s Advanced Technology and Projects group and Google X. There he advises on legal and policy matters for emerging technologies, including Google’s self-driving car project, Project Ara (modular smartphone), Project Jacquard (digital textiles), Project Soli (radar-based gesture controls), and Spotlight Stories (360-degree immersive video content). Mr. Lue is also a legal lecturer at Stanford Law School and was previously Acting General Counsel at the White House Office of Management and Budget. He serves on the Board of Directors of the Hamilton Family Center and is a member of the Edward J. McFetridge American Inn of Court.

Mr. Lue’s wide expertise in the law, in technology, and in the social sector is fastened by his vigor for progress. “The importance of civic education in preparing the next generation of active, informed, and engaged citizens has never been greater,” he says. “I look forward to working with the iCivics team and community to help advance this critical mission.”
