Civics on the Legislative Slate

March 11, 2020 | 3:30PM – 4:30PM
Hilton Austin Downtown, Room 412
Floor: 4, 500 E 4th St.

Civic education is on the brink of revival. Led by a growing movement for legislation that requires civics and makes it relevant to today’s youth, more than 80 bills pushing for better civics were brought before state legislatures this past year. Federal legislation may soon follow. This panel with CivXNow, a coalition of more than 100 orgs calling for better civics, will look at what’s happened so far, what’s next, and what we can learn from states that have already passed new laws.

Panelists: Louise Dubé of iCivics, Shawn Healy of the Robert McCormick Foundation, Emma Vadehra of Next 100, and Andrew Wilkes of Generation Citizen.

Pass the Mic: Students Discuss Equity in Civics

March 9, 2020 | 5:00PM – 6:00PM
Hilton Austin Downtown, Room 400
Floor: 4, 500 E 4th St.

Are students getting what they need from their civic education? This session will pass the mic to the students, allowing them to share their insights and experiences working with adults to bring equitable change to their civic learning environments. If students are our primary stakeholders, why aren’t we asking them what they think? This session will focus on the impact of the Equity in Civics Youth Fellowship, highlighting student voice as central to the discussion on equity in civic education.

Panelists: Amber Coleman-Mortley of iCivics, A'Niya Bankston, a member of iCivics' Equity in Civics Youth Fellowship, Jaden Deal, a student at Harvard University, and Alexandra Henderson, a member of iCivics' Equity in Civics Youth Fellowship.
