This lesson shows students how the government gets its budget. It leads students through each step of the legislative process that results in a federal budget. Through a PowerPoint presentation or paper reading option, students learn about the compromises and choices that go into creating a budget to fund our government!
Students will be able to
ANTICIPATE the lesson by asking the following questions: What is a budget? Do you have a budget? Who makes the budget in your house?
DISTRIBUTE the Creating the Budget Guided Notes.
RUN the Creating the Budget PowerPoint presentation using the built-in questions as an opportunity for class review and as a check for understanding. Have students work through their guided notes.
OR
DISTRIBUTE the Creating the Budget Reading and Creating the Budget Guided Notes.
READ through the Creating the Budget Reading as a class, stopping to review and check for understanding.
INSTRUCT students to complete the Creating the Budget Guided Notes page, individually, in pairs, or as a whole class activity.
AND
DISTRIBUTE the Creating the Budget Chronology Cards (half a page per student).
DIRECT students to cut and paste OR copy the information from the chronology cards to their Creating the Budget Guided Notes (page 2). Make sure students follow the order that events occur in the construction of the federal budget.
DISTRIBUTE the Creating the Budget Processing and vocabulary activities.
REVIEW instructions for the Processing Activity and instruct students to complete the activities.
