About Project
Math proficiency is below 50% for elementary school students in the D.C. public school system. In a society where one’s education level correlates with his/her socio-economic status, students risk becoming impoverished if they do not succeed in school. Therefore, we created MASTERS, an after-school math program where 4th and 5th grade students from a D.C. public school complete math projects with high school volunteers.
Instead of students focusing on redundant math drills, MASTERS enables students to complete a unit of applied math every month, ranging from cooking to statistics. Students often view math as unimportant; our goal is to motivate young students to enjoy and succeed in math by demonstrating that the subject is useful and fun. By enlisting high school students who are academically successful and enjoy learning, participants discover that both their enthusiasm to learn and their hard work will lead them to completing their secondary education, attending college, and finding a sustainable career.
Project Reward
In order for MASTERS to continue to run efficiently, we need additional funding to alleviate the cost of transporting volunteers to and from the school in D.C. We will use the reward to provide reliable transportation for the volunteers without depleting resources for the participants. It will also us help market ourselves to future donors, and help MASTERS become self-sustainable for the future.

Mathematics is a subject that goes beyond the normalities and reasoning of the world. If other countries still rule the economy such as some third world countries (America is 12th place for education), then we will go into another recession and possible overthrow of the government. What most people don't understand is that allowing education to increase gradually, we fall behind the pace of other countries, but if we increase our pull on education, then we have a tighter reign allowing us to run headon with the other nations.
But one thing still: Math proficiency isn't a good cause. Why should education be put before the necessities of the American society. How can people learn a complicated subject when their nation has enought problems already? You are putting the welfare and protection of our natural places and our country in danger by focusing on arithemetic? That is absurd! Not that you don't care about education, but you will put the safety of our nation, put the survival of our population, put the core foundation of our world underneath a bare priveledge?
I recommend that you consider your choice for the procession of this argument as well as its counterpart, the project.
Remember: People First, Country Second, and State Rights last.
Do you care more about the future of our people, or whatever they may become?

Disappointed
I find myself disappointed and mildly angry. Lives could have been saved. The reason they weren't is that the majority of the people on this site find math scores more important than children themselves. Count 15 seconds. A child just died of starvation. It could have been you if you weren't lucky enough to be born in your pampered bubble of American Society. I'm disappointed because tomorrow we will continue our lives as normal, completely ignorant to the problems around us. More children will die, more have no future because of war, political troubles, or lack of education. The MASTERS program will set up its educational doodads that may have some effect on a useless number used to display American ignorance. I'm disappointed because we are all selfish to the point of cruelty and so blind that we stumble.

You make a very strong point in this topic. I agree that they should be worrying about other things than MATH PROFICIENCY! Math is important but the selfish people on this website that donate all their points to projects that only effect LOCAL AREAS. People should be donating their points to the Impact Projects that can help the world by supplying food to the hungry and houses to the homeless. Hopefully, during the next impact competition, people will donate more to the Impact Projects that will give food to the hungry and homes to the homeless. They should also have an Impact Project that helps with purifying water in Africa so that the people there can have clean water, instead of the dirty, bacteria infested water they drink now.
